1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Yes," said Hurstwood, whose face was a study.
2. He walked on with her, elated beyond words, so delightful hadbeen the result. He impressed a long story of joy and affectionupon her, though there was but here and there a word. After ahalf-hour he began to realise that the meeting must come to anend, so exacting is the world.
3. "I'll not live with you," said Carrie. "I don't want to livewith you. You've done nothing but brag around ever since you'vebeen here."
4. "Why don't you get into some good, strong comedy-drama?" he said.He was looking directly at her now, studying her face. Herlarge, sympathetic eyes and pain-touched mouth appealed to him asproofs of his judgment.
5. As a matter of fact, no man as clever as Hurstwood--as observantand sensitive to atmospheres of many sorts, particularly upon hisown plane of thought--would have made the mistake which he did inregard to his wife, wrought up as she was, had he not beenoccupied mentally with a very different train of thought. Hadnot the influence of Carrie's regard for him, the elation whichher promise aroused in him, lasted over, he would not have seenthe house in so pleasant a mood. It was not extraordinarilybright and merry this evening. He was merely very much mistaken, and would have been much more fitted to cope with it had he comehome in his normal state.
6. "What's the matter, George?" asked Taintor. "You look a littleglum. Haven't lost at the track, have you?"

1. "May I bring a nice little bottle of Sec?" asked Hurstwood."Certainly," said Drouet. "I'll introduce you."
2. They descended the stairs, Mrs. Vance offering suggestions, andclimbed into the open coach.
3. "Got on the new shoes, haven't you? Stick 'em out. George, theylook fine. Put on your jacket."
4. "Well, you do look great," he said. "I never saw anybody improveso. You're taller, aren't you?"
5. "I'm out of work and out of money and I've got to get something,--it doesn't matter what. I don't care to talk about what I'vebeen, but if you'd tell me how to get something to do, I'd bemuch obliged to you. It wouldn't matter if it only lasted a fewdays just now. I've got to have something."
6. "Well," he said, "what of it?"

1. "Oh," sobbed Carrie, "oh, oh--oo--o!"
2. Always from the man at the corner now he bought two papers--the"Evening World" and "Evening Sun." So now he merely picked hispapers up, as he came by, without stopping.
3. "I don't know," he said solemnly; "I can try."
4. "Don't worry about it. Maybe the grocer will wait. He can dothat. We've traded there long enough to make him trust us for aweek or two."
5. "Oh, mercy," she exclaimed, "what will we do? It's only twentydays until the rent will be due again."
6. "Got an appointment with him?"

1. "Oh, me," said Carrie, pensively. "I wish I could live in such aplace."
2. "I don't see where your wrath comes in. I've got the right ofthis thing. You oughtn't to have done anything that wasn't rightafter all I did for you."
3. That little student had mastered her part to her ownsatisfaction, much as she trembled for her fate when she shouldonce face the gathered throng, behind the glare of thefootlights. She tried to console herself with the thought that ascore of other persons, men and women, were equally tremulousconcerning the outcome of their efforts, but she could notdisassociate the general danger from her own individualliability. She feared that she would forget her lines, that shemight be unable to master the feeling which she now feltconcerning her own movements in the play. At times she wishedthat she had never gone into the affair; at others, she trembledlest she should be paralysed with fear and stand white andgasping, not knowing what to say and spoiling the entireperformance.
4、 "You'd like to see Michigan Avenue. There are such fine houses. It is such a fine street."
5、 "Maitland! Maitland!" he called once.

"Well, well!" said a voice. In the first glance she beheldDrouet. He was not only rosy-cheeked, but radiant. He was theessence of sunshine and good-humour. "Why, how are you, Carrie?"he said. "You're a daisy. Where have you been?"

On the stage, six of the characters had already appeared in theopening parlour scene. Drouet and Hurstwood saw at a glance thatCarrie was not among them, and went on talking in a whisper.Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Hoagland, and the actor who had takenBamberger's part were representing the principal roles in thisscene. The professional, whose name was Patton, had little torecommend him outside of his assurance, but this at the presentmoment was most palpably needed. Mrs. Morgan, as Pearl, wasstiff with fright. Mrs. Hoagland was husky in the throat. Thewhole company was so weak-kneed that the lines were merelyspoken, and nothing more. It took all the hope and uncriticalgood-nature of the audience to keep from manifesting pity by thatunrest which is the agony of failure.

"Poor Pearl," she said, speaking with natural pathos. "It is asad thing to want for happiness, but it is a terrible thing tosee another groping about blindly for it, when it is almostwithin the grasp."

      He looked rather determined now, in a desolate sort of way, andCarrie felt very sorry. Something of the old Hurstwood was here--the least shadow of what was once shrewd and pleasant strength.Outside, it was cloudy and blowing a few flakes of snow.}

Carrie went straight forward until she crossed the river, andthen turned into Fifth Avenue. The thoroughfare, in this part, was like a walled canon of brown stone and dark red brick. Thebig windows looked shiny and clean. Trucks were rumbling inincreasing numbers; men and women, girls and boys were movingonward in all directions. She met girls of her own age, wholooked at her as if with contempt for her diffidence. Shewondered at the magnitude of this life and at the importance ofknowing much in order to do anything in it at all. Dread at herown inefficiency crept upon her. She would not know how, shewould not be quick enough. Had not all the other places refusedher because she did not know something or other? She would bescolded, abused, ignominiously discharged.

"What's the use?" he thought, looking out upon the slop and snow."I couldn't buy into it. It's a thousand to one nothing comes ofit. I guess I'll get off," and off he got. In the lobby he tooka seat and waited again, wondering what he could do.
