1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Well, he was once Senator for some Western state, but is betterknown as the greatest gold-mining magnate in the world.""Yes, I know of him. he has surely lived in England for some time. His name is very familiar."
2. "The end may have been so," I answered, "but the methods I hold tohave been novel and of interest."

4. "The ceremony, which was performed at St. George's, HanoverSquare, was a very quiet one, no one being present save the fatherof the bride, Mr. Aloysius Doran, the Duchess of Balmoral, LordBackwater, Lord Eustace, and Lady Clara St. Simon (the younger brotherand sister of the bridegroom), and Lady Alicia Whittington. Thewhole party proceeded afterwards to the house of Mr. Aloysius Doran,at Lancaster Gate, where breakfast had been prepared. It appearsthat some little trouble was caused by a woman, whose name has notbeen ascertained, who endeavoured to force her way into the houseafter the bridal party, alleging that she had some claim upon Lord St.Simon. It was only after a painful and prolonged scene that she wasejected by the butler and the footman. The bride, who hadfortunately entered the house before this unpleasant interruption, hadsat down to breakfast with the rest, when she complained of a suddenindisposition and retired to her room. Her prolonged absence havingcaused some comment, her father followed her, but learned from hermaid that she had only come up to her chamber for an instant, caughtup an ulster and bonnet, and hurried down to the passage. One of thefootmen declared that he had seen a lady leave the house thusapparelled, but had refused to credit that it was his mistress, believing her to be with the company. On ascertaining that hisdaughter had disappeared, Mr. Aloysius Doran, in conjunction withthe bridegroom, instantly put themselves in communication with thepolice, and very energetic inquiries are being made, which willprobably result in a speedy clearing up of this very singularbusiness. Up to a late hour last night, however, nothing hadtranspired as to the whereabouts of the missing lady. There arerumours of foul play in the matter, and it is said that the policehave caused the arrest of the woman who had caused the originaldisturbance, in the belief that, from jealousy or some other motive, she may have been concerned in the strange disappearance of thebride."
5. We both sat in silence for some little time after listening tothis extraordinary narrative. Then Sherlock Holmes pulled down fromthe shelf one of the ponderous commonplace books in which he placedhis cuttings.
6. "Well, I suggested a blind."

1. "Upon his watch-chain."
2. We approached the door, but suddenly a woman appeared out of theshadow and stood in the golden track of the lamplight. I could not seeher face in the darkness, but her arms were thrown out in anattitude of entreaty.
3. "Well, at least," said Holmes, "you have had your revenge upon them. There can be no question that it was your oillamp which, when it wascrushed in the Press, set fire to the wooden walls, though no doubtthey were too excited in the chase after you to observe it at thetime. Now your eyes open in this crowd for your friends of last night, though I very much fear that they are a good hundred miles off bynow."
4. "He's alone in there. Let's do him in. If his light were out weshould have nothing to fear."
5. The garden gate of The Haven had opened and a man had emerged. Therewas no mistaking that tall, angular, straggling figure. It was IanMurdoch, the mathematician. A moment later we confronted him uponthe road.
6. "'Tut, tut!' he cried. 'This is all quite beside the question. Thepoint is, have you or have you not the bearing and deportment of alady? There it is in a nutshell. If you have not, you are not fittedfor the rearing of a child who may some day play a considerable partin the history of the country. But if you have, why, then, how couldany gentleman ask you to condescend to accept anything under the threefigures? Your salary with me, madam, would commence at L100 a year.'"You may imagine, Mr. Holmes, that to me, destitute as I was, suchan offer seemed almost too good to be true. The gentleman, however, seeing perhaps the look of incredulity upon my face, opened apocket-book and took out a note.

1. "The Duke, then?"
2. Two days later, when I called upon my friend, he pointed with somepride to a small blue bottle upon his mantelpiece. I picked it up.There was a red poison label. A pleasant almondy odour rose when Iopened it.
3. "And why, sir?"
4. "Her doctor would certify that for months her symptoms havethreatened such an end."
5. Yet we added one more sheaf to our harvest before we left WoolwichStation. The clerk in the ticket office was able to say withconfidence that he saw Cadogan West- whom he knew well by sight-upon the Monday night, and that he went to London by the 8:15 toLondon Bridge. He was alone and took a single third-class ticket. The clerk was struck at the time by his excited and nervous manner. Soshaky was he that he could hardly pick up his change, and the clerkhad helped him with it. A reference to the timetable showed that the8:15 was the first train which it was possible for West to takeafter he had left the lady about 7:30.
6. "At what hour was the office closed on Monday?"

2. The young lady resumed her seat with an air of displeasure. Herbrother, however, had joined us and we set off all four together. Wepassed round the lawn to the outside of the young diplomatist'swindow. There were, as he had said, marks upon the bed, but theywere hopelessly blurred and vague. Holmes stooped over them for aninstant, and then rose shrugging his shoulders.
3. Sherlock Holmes picked them up one by one and laid them along theedge of the table. Then he reseated himself in his chair and lookedthem over with a gleam of satisfaction in his eyes.
4、 "That Miss Flora Millar, the lady who had caused the disturbance, has actually been arrested. It appears that she was formerly adanseuse at the Allegro, and that she has known the bridegroom forsome years. There are no further particulars, and the whole case is inyour hands now-so far as it has been set forth in the public press.""And an exceedingly interesting case it appears to be. I would nothave missed it for worlds. But there is a ring at the bell, Watson, and as the clock makes it a few minutes after four, I have no doubtthat this will prove to be our noble client. Do not dream of going,Watson, for I very much prefer having a witness, if only as a check tomy own memory."
5、 "I will do so, and I will show the steps by which I reached it.And let me to you, first, that which it is hardest for me to say andfor you to hear: there has been an understanding between Sir GeorgeBurnwell and your niece Mary. They have now fled together.""My Mary? Impossible!"

      It was a singular sight which met our eyes. On the table stood adark-lantern with the shutter half open, throwing a brilliant beamof light upon the iron safe, the door of which was ajar. Beside thistable, on the wooden chair, sat Dr. Grimesby Roylott, clad in a longgray dressing-gown, his bare ankles protruding beneath, and his feetthrust into red heelless Turkish slippers. Across his lap lay theshort stock with the long lash which we had noticed during the day.His chin was cocked upward and his eyes were fixed in a dreadful,rigid stare at the corner of the ceiling. Round his brow he had apeculiar yellow band, with brownish speckles, which seemed to be boundtightly round his head. As we entered he made neither sound normotion.}
