1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Oh, a couple of girls over here in Fortieth Street. We couldhave a dandy time. I was just looking for you."
2. "A pickpocket! Well!" exclaimed Mr. Bamberger, speaking the linesthat here fell to him.
3. "Oh, do come. They're awful nice boys. We'll get you back intime. We're only going for a drive in Central Park."Carrie thought a while, and at last yielded.
4. "It's a miserable day out," was all he said. Then he took offhis coat and changed his shoes.
5. At the stable he picked a gentle horse, and they were soon out ofrange of either public observation or hearing.
6. "Well, well," said Drouet, "you did out of sight. That wassimply great. I knew you could do it. Oh, but you're a littledaisy!"

1. "Oh!" answered Carrie. "Why, certainly, dear. Why didn't youtell me before?"
2. "Is that so?" said the hotel man. "How did you come to get outof that?"
3. "Oh, dear," said Carrie.
4. "I know that big guy that called us a --- --- --- ----" said thefirst. "I'll get him yet for that."
5. At both of these two charities, during the severe winter whichwas now on, Hurstwood was a frequent visitor. On one occasion itwas peculiarly cold, and finding no comfort in begging about thestreets, he waited until noon before seeking this free offeringto the poor. Already, at eleven o'clock of this morning, severalsuch as he had shambled forward out of Sixth Avenue, their thinclothes flapping and fluttering in the wind. They leaned againstthe iron railing which protects the walls of the Ninth RegimentArmory, which fronts upon that section of Fifteenth Street, having come early in order to be first in. Having an hour towait, they at first lingered at a respectful distance; but otherscoming up, they moved closer in order to protect their right ofprecedence. To this collection Hurstwood came up from the westout of Seventh Avenue and stopped close to the door, nearer thanall the others. Those who had been waiting before him, butfarther away, now drew near, and by a certain stolidity ofdemeanour, no words being spoken, indicated that they were first.
6. "I wouldn't try it," said the other. The approaching change now took on a most serious aspect toHurstwood. Dissolution meant the loss of his thousand dollars, and he could not save another thousand in the time. Heunderstood that Shaughnessy was merely tired of the arrangement, and would probably lease the new corner, when completed, alone. He began to worry about the necessity of a new connection and tosee impending serious financial straits unless something turnedup. This left him in no mood to enjoy his flat or Carrie, andconsequently the depression invaded that quarter.

1. Hurstwood was already there, sitting in his place.
2. "Supposing you get 'em and take 'em out to dinner?"
3. "They've got the militia on their side," he thought. "Thereisn't anything those men can do."
4. Standing tells. Hurstwood became more weary waiting. He thoughthe should drop soon and shifted restlessly from one foot to theother. At last his turn came. The man ahead had been paid forand gone to the blessed line of success. He was now first, andalready the captain was talking for him.
5. "Nothing," said Miss Elvers, while some smiled and stoodnervously by.
6. "Well, I did it," said Drouet, "and you took it."

1. "Come and go along," said Lola.
2. Hurstwood saw her depart with some faint stirrings of shame, which were the expression of a manhood rapidly becomingstultified. He sat a while, and then it became too much. He gotup and put on his hat.
3. "I'm out of work and out of money and I've got to get something,--it doesn't matter what. I don't care to talk about what I'vebeen, but if you'd tell me how to get something to do, I'd bemuch obliged to you. It wouldn't matter if it only lasted a fewdays just now. I've got to have something."
4、 The little actress was in fine feather. She was realising nowwhat it was to be petted. For once she was the admired, thesought-for. The independence of success now made its first faintshowing. With the tables turned, she was looking down, ratherthan up, to her lover. She did not fully realise that this wasso, but there was something in condescension coming from herwhich was infinitely sweet. When she was ready they climbed intothe waiting coach and drove down town; once, only, did she findan opportunity to express her feeling, and that was when themanager preceded Drouet in the coach and sat beside her. BeforeDrouet was fully in she had squeezed Hurstwood's hand in agentle, impulsive manner. The manager was beside himself withaffection. He could have sold his soul to be with her alone."Ah," he thought, "the agony of it."
5、 "Oh, yes," she answered, rather pleased now with his caution. Itwas clever for Drouet.

He began to wish that he had compromised in some way or other--that he had sent the money. Perhaps he could do it up here. Hewould go in and see, anyhow. He would have no row. By the timehe reached his own street he was keenly alive to the difficultiesof his situation and wished over and over that some solutionwould offer itself, that he could see his way out. He alightedand went up the steps to the front door, but it was with anervous palpitation of the heart. He pulled out his key andtried to insert it, but another key was on the inside. He shookat the knob, but the door was locked. Then he rang the bell. Noanswer. He rang again--this time harder. Still no answer. Hejangled it fiercely several times in succession, but withoutavail. Then he went below.

Hurstwood began to feel a deep sympathy for her and for himself. He could almost feel that she was talking to him. He was, by acombination of feelings and entanglements, almost deluded by thatquality of voice and manner which, like a pathetic strain ofmusic, seems ever a personal and intimate thing. Pathos has thisquality, that it seems ever addressed to one alone.

When she was gone, he gave freer play to his feelings. His face, never easily controlled by him, expressed all the perplexity anddisturbance which he felt. Could it be that Carrie had receivedso many visits and yet said nothing about them? Was Hurstwoodlying? What did the chambermaid mean by it, anyway? He hadthought there was something odd about Carrie's manner at thetime. Why did she look so disturbed when he had asked her howmany times Hurstwood had called? By George! He remembered now. There was something strange about the whole thing.

Her cowardice began to trouble her in a way. She turned back, resolving to hunt up Storm and King and enter. On the way, sheencountered a great wholesale shoe company, through the broadplate windows of which she saw an enclosed executive department, hidden by frosted glass. Without this enclosure, but just withinthe street entrance, sat a grey-haired gentleman at a smalltable, with a large open ledger before him. She walked by thisinstitution several times hesitating, but, finding herselfunobserved, faltered past the screen door and stood humblewaiting.
