2. Together they finished the labour of the day, Carrie washing thedishes while Minnie undressed the baby and put it to bed.Minnie's manner was one of trained industry, and Carrie could seethat it was a steady round of toil with her.
3. "Just thinking what?" she returned smilingly, puzzled by hisattitude.
4. "All right," was his only reply. He had long since wearied ofdiscussing the rancorous subject.
5. "Why," he said, actually stammering, "how do you do?"
6. "No," he said. "What good would it do? A man doesn't need thissort of thing to be happy."

计划指导

1. Mrs. Hanson, after the first greetings were over, gave Carrie thebaby and proceeded to get supper. Her husband asked a fewquestions and sat down to read the evening paper. He was asilent man, American born, of a Swede father, and now employed asa cleaner of refrigerator cars at the stock-yards. To him thepresence or absence of his wife's sister was a matter ofindifference. Her personal appearance did not affect him one wayor the other. His one observation to the point was concerningthe chances of work in Chicago.
2. "Huh! there's a lot back there yet," said a man farther up,leaning out and looking back at the applicants for whom thecaptain was pleading.
3. "All right. They're going to fit things up out of the proceeds."
4. "If I were you," he said a little later, "I wouldn't let herstand in the door down there. It don't look good."
5. "That was one of the best things I've seen in a long time," headded.
6. They tried in time and were apprised of the proper date to applyagain. That was May 16th. Meanwhile their own show closed May5th.

1. "Don't show any more interest in me than you ever have,"Hurstwood counselled concerning the evening at the theatre.
2. Suddenly he looked up.
3. "Oh, he's a nice man. He's manager of Fitzgerald and Moy's."
4. When Carrie had gone, he felicitated himself upon her goodopinion. By George, it was a shame young girls had to be knockedaround like that. Cold weather coming on and no clothes. Tough. He would go around to Fitzgerald and Moy's and get a cigar. Itmade him feel light of foot as he thought about her.
5. "How much did you say he took?" said Carrie.
6. "Twelve o'clock," said Hurstwood.

1. Vance led the way through lanes of shining tables, at which wereseated parties of two, three, four, five, or six. The air ofassurance and dignity about it all was exceedingly noticeable tothe novitiate. Incandescent lights, the reflection of their glowin polished glasses, and the shine of gilt upon the walls, combined into one tone of light which it requires minutes ofcomplacent observation to separate and take particular note of.The white shirt fronts of the gentlemen, the bright costumes ofthe ladies, diamonds, jewels, fine feathers--all were exceedinglynoticeable.
2. "I hadn't thought of it," returned Carrie.
3. Hurstwood had been reading of this thing, and wonderingconcerning the huge tie-up which would follow. A day or twobefore this trouble with Carrie, it came. On a cold afternoon, when everything was grey and it threatened to snow, the papersannounced that the men had been called out on all the lines.Being so utterly idle, and his mind filled with the numerouspredictions which had been made concerning the scarcity of labourthis winter and the panicky state of the financial market,Hurstwood read this with interest. He noted the claims of thestriking motormen and conductors, who said that they had beenwont to receive two dollars a day in times past, but that for ayear or more "trippers" had been introduced, which cut down theirchance of livelihood one-half, and increased their hours ofservitude from ten to twelve, and even fourteen. These"trippers" were men put on during the busy and rush hours, totake a car out for one trip. The compensation paid for such atrip was only twenty-five cents. When the rush or busy hourswere over, they were laid off. Worst of all, no man might knowwhen he was going to get a car. He must come to the barns in themorning and wait around in fair and foul weather until such timeas he was needed. Two trips were an average reward for so muchwaiting--a little over three hours' work for fifty cents. Thework of waiting was not counted.
4、 WEE QUESTION OF FORTUNE--FOUR-FIFTY A WEEK
5、 "Here we are then," he went on in the same tone, "wasting ourdays. If you are not happy, do you think I am? I sit and writeto you the biggest part of the time. I'll tell you what,Carrie," he exclaimed, throwing sudden force of expression intohis voice and fixing her with his eyes, "I can't live withoutyou, and that's all there is to it. Now," he concluded, showingthe palm of one of his white hands in a sort of at-an-end,helpless expression, "what shall I do?"

He entered, and then began a scene which had as much to do withthe creation of the tragedy of affection in Hurstwood as anythingin his peculiar and involved career. For Carrie had resolved tomake something of this scene, and, now that the cue had come, itbegan to take a feeling hold upon her. Both Hurstwood and Drouetnoted the rising sentiment as she proceeded.
