1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Carrie was doing better, that he knew. Her clothes were improvednow, even fine. He saw her coming and going, sometimes picturingto himself her rise. Little eating had thinned him somewhat. Hehad no appetite. His clothes, too, were a poor man's clothes.Talk about getting something had become even too threadbare andridiculous for him. So he folded his hands and waited--for what,he could not anticipate.
2. "I'll try to," said Bob smiling, and edging closer to Carrie."You won't need much watching, will you?" he volunteered, in asort of ingratiating and help-me-out kind of way.
3. "Do you think you can get something else?" she ventured, timidly.
4. Carrie shook her head.
5. "You ought to pay for seeing your old friends. Bother the show!"
6. He put his hand to his chin, forgetting, for the moment, thepapers.

1. The intention was to give him an afternoon of practice, but thegreater part of the time was spent in waiting about.
2. She said nothing more then, objecting to giving up her own money, and yet feeling that such would have to be the case. Hurstwoodfelt the crisis, and artfully decided to appeal to Carrie. Hehad long since realised how good-natured she was, how much shewould stand. There was some little shame in him at the thoughtof doing so, but he justified himself with the thought that hereally would get something. Rent day gave him his opportunity.
3. "Nothing of the kind," he answered. "I can't avoid businessrelations, and that's all there is to it."
4. The car ran back more quietly--hooted, watched, flung at, but notattacked. Hurstwood breathed freely when he saw the barns.
5. "Look at the copper watchin'."
6. It was not quite two days after the scene between Carrie andHurstwood in the Ogden Place parlour before he again put in hisappearance. He had been thinking almost uninterruptedly of her.Her leniency had, in a way, inflamed his regard. He felt that hemust succeed with her, and that speedily.

1. "Yes, but a thief hardly six years old, with a face like anangel's. 'Stop,' said my mother. 'What are you doing?'
2. "I'll ask her. She won't refuse me a few dollars."
3. "A pickpocket! Well!" exclaimed Mr. Bamberger, speaking the linesthat here fell to him.
4. "Well, then, Wheeler," he said. "I'll get the license thisafternoon."
5. "Well, I don't know," said Carrie, when he had concluded, herinterest and desire to shine dramatically struggling with hertimidity for the mastery. "I might go if you thought I'd do allright."
6. With it once out and before him, it seemed a foolish thing tothink about leaving it. Certainly it would. Why, he could livequietly with Carrie for years.

1. "My dear," he returned, "I haven't time. I'm too busy."
2. Carrie listened to this with mingled feelings. Her mind wasshaken loose from the little mooring of logic that it had. Shewas stirred by this thought, angered by that--her own injustice,Hurstwood's, Drouet's, their respective qualities of kindness andfavour, the threat of the world outside, in which she had failedonce before, the impossibility of this state inside, where thechambers were no longer justly hers, the effect of the argumentupon her nerves, all combined to make her a mass of janglingfibres--an anchorless, storm-beaten little craft which could doabsolutely nothing but drift.
3. "She's frightened," whispered Drouet to Hurstwood.
4、 Here was another proposition nearly, if not quite, as disturbing. She would have to talk with and explain to him. He would wanther to admit that he was right. It would be impossible for herto live with him.
5、 He got up and looked out the window into the chilly street. Itcame gradually into his mind, as he stood there, to go toBrooklyn.

To add to his misery there was no word from Carrie. He was quitecertain now that she knew he was married and was angered at hisperfidy. His loss seemed all the more bitter now that he neededher most. He thought he would go out and insist on seeing her ifshe did not send him word of some sort soon. He was reallyaffected most miserably of all by this desertion. He had lovedher earnestly enough, but now that the possibility of losing herstared him in the face she seemed much more attractive. Hereally pined for a word, and looked out upon her with his mind'seye in the most wistful manner. He did not propose to lose her, whatever she might think. Come what might, he would adjust thismatter, and soon. He would go to her and tell her all his familycomplications. He would explain to her just where he stood andhow much he needed her. Surely she couldn't go back on him now?It wasn't possible. He would plead until her anger would melt--until she would forgive him.

Carrie was listening without attempting to reply. She couldthink of nothing worth while to say. Despite all the ideasconcerning right which had troubled her vaguely since she hadlast seen him, she was now influenced again strongly in hisfavour.

{ Carrie looked at him a moment with the faintest touch of surpriseat his seriousness. He seemed to be thinking about somethingover which she had never pondered.

      The morning was no better. Hanson was just going out the door asCarrie came from her room. Minnie tried to talk with her duringbreakfast, but there was not much of interest which they couldmutually discuss. As on the previous morning, Carrie walked downtown, for she began to realise now that her four-fifty would noteven allow her car fare after she paid her board. This seemed amiserable arrangement. But the morning light swept away thefirst misgivings of the day, as morning light is ever wont to do.}

And now Carrie had attained that which in the beginning seemedlife's object, or, at least, such fraction of it as human beingsever attain of their original desires. She could look about onher gowns and carriage, her furniture and bank account. Friendsthere were, as the world takes it--those who would bow and smilein acknowledgment of her success. For these she had once craved.Applause there was, and publicity--once far off, essentialthings, but now grown trivial and indifferent. Beauty also--hertype of loveliness--and yet she was lonely. In her rocking-chairshe sat, when not otherwise engaged--singing and dreaming.
