1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 The Count's bewilderment overmastered his rage and fear."But how the deuce-?" he gasped.
2. "But he must be alive, Mr. Holmes."
3. "He must guard himself, for he may find that there is someone morecunning than himself upon his track. You must lock yourself up fromhim to-night. If he is violent, we shall take you away to youraunt's at Harrow. Now, we must make the best use of our time, sokindly take us at once to the rooms which we are to examine."The building was of gray, lichen-blotched stone, with a high centralportion and two curving wings, like the claws of a crab, thrown out oneach side. In one of these wings the windows were broken and blockedwith wooden boards, while the roof was partly caved in, a picture ofruin. The central portion was in little better repair, but theright-hand block was comparatively modern, and the blinds in thewindows, with the blue smoke curling up from the chimneys, showed thatthis was where the family resided. Some scaffolding had been erectedagainst the end wall, and the stone-work had been broken into, butthere were no signs of any workmen at the moment of our visit.Holmes walked slowly up and down the ill-trimmed lawn and examinedwith deep attention the outsides of the windows.

5. "My nerves are fairly proof, Watson, but I must confess to a startwhen I saw the very man who had been so much in my thoughts standingthere on my threshold. His appearance was quite familiar to me. Heis extremely tall and thin, his forehead domes out in a white curve, and his two eyes are deeply sunken in his head. He is clean-shaven,pale, and ascetic-looking, retaining something of the professor in hisfeatures. His shoulders are rounded from much study, and his faceprotrudes forward and is forever slowly oscillating from side toside in a curiously reptilian fashion. He peered at me with greatcuriosity in his puckered eyes.
6. "So I came to a dead end, Mr. Holmes. There was no getting pastit. I could only pretend to accept the situation and register a vowinwardly that I would never rest until my friend's fate had beencleared up. It was a dull evening. We dined quietly, the three ofus, in a gloomy faded old room. The lady questioned me eagerly abouther son, but the old man seemed morose and depressed. I was so boredby the whole proceeding that I made an excuse as soon as I decentlycould and retired to my bedroom. It was a large, bare room on theground floor, as gloomy as the rest of the house, but after a yearof sleeping upon the veldt, Mr. Holmes, one is not too particularabout one's quarters. I opened the curtains and looked out into thegarden, remarking that it was a fine night with a bright half-moon.Then I sat down by the roaring fire with the lamp on a table besideme, and endeavoured to distract my mind with a novel. I wasinterrupted, however, by Ralph, the old butler, who came in with afresh supply of coals.

1. "You have done wisely," said my friend. "But have you told me all?""Yes, all."
2. Sherlock Holmes was in a melancholy and philosophic mood thatmorning. His alert practical nature was subject to such reactions."Did you see him?" he asked.
3. "Then we shall take it. Your case has certainly some features ofgreat interest, and I shall be delighted to look into it. Well, it'snearly one, and we had best get a few hours' sleep. I daresay youcan manage all right on the sofa in front of the fire. I'll light myspirit lamp, and give you a cup of coffee before we start."The gale had blown itself out next day, but it was a bittermorning when we started upon our journey. We saw the cold winter sunrise over the dreary marshes of the Thames and the long, suddenreaches of the river, which I shall ever associate with our pursuit ofthe Andaman Islander in the earlier days of our career. After a longand weary journey, we alighted at a small station some miles fromChatham. While a horse was being put into a trap at the local inn,we snatched a hurried breakfast, and so we were all ready for businesswhen we at last arrived at Yoxley Old Place. A constable met us at thegarden gate.
4. Ten minutes later we were both in a cab, and rattling through thesilent streets on our way to Charing Cross Station. The first faintwinter's dawn was beginning to appear, and we could dimly see theoccasional figure of an early workman as he passed us, blurred andindistinct in the opalescent London reek. Holmes nestled in silenceinto his heavy coat, and I was glad to do the same, for the air wasmost bitter, and neither of us had broken our fast.
5. "No, there is nothing."
6. "Most undoubtedly."

1. It proved, however, that our vigil was not to be so long as Holmeshad led us to fear, and it ended in a very sudden and singularfashion. In an instant, without the least sound to warn us of hiscoming, the garden gate swung open, and a lithe, dark figure, as swiftand active as an ape, rushed up the garden path. We saw it whiskpast the light thrown from over the door and disappear against theblack shadow of the house. There was a long pause, during which weheld our breath, and then a very gentle creaking sound came to ourears. The window was being opened. The noise ceased, and again therewas a long silence. The fellow was making his way into the house. Wesaw the sudden flash of a dark lantern inside the room. What he soughtwas evidently not there, for again we saw the flash through anotherblind, and then through another.
2. "That is your name for the evening, Watson. You will call upon BaronGruner. I know something of his habits, and at half-past eight hewould probably be disengaged. A note will tell him in advance that youare about to call, and you will say that you are bringing him aspecimen of an absolutely unique set of Ming china. You may as well bea medical man, since that is a part which you can play withoutduplicity. You are a collector, this set has come your way, you haveheard of the Baron's interest in the subject, and you are not averseto selling at a price."
3. "I need not say that I have confirmed it, Watson," said Holmes asI returned the paper. "Do you know anything of this man Damery?""Only that this name is a household word in society."
4. "Your cipher was not difficult, madam. Your presence here wasdesirable. I knew that I had only to flash "Vieni" and you wouldsurely come."
5. And Holmes's fears came to be realized, for from that day to this noword has ever been heard either of the beautiful woman, the sinisterGerman, or the morose Englishman. Early that morning a peasant had meta cart containing several people and some very bulky boxes drivingrapidly in the direction of Reading, but there all traces of thefugitives disappeared, and even Holmes's ingenuity failed ever todiscover the least clue as to their whereabouts.
6. "This is the envelope," he continued. "The postmark isLondon--eastern division. Within are the very words which wereupon my father's last message: `K. K. K.'; and then `Put thepapers on the sundial.'"

1. "It is solved."
2. "Who is this dead woman?"
3. The veins stood out on the Count's forehead. His dark, hairy handswere clenched in a convulsion of restrained emotion. He tried tospeak, but the words would not shape themselves.
4、 "Wait a bit!" cried Gregson eagerly. "I'll do you this justice,Mr. Holmes, that I was never in a case yet that I didn't feel strongerfor having you on my side. There's only the one exit to these flats,so we have him safe."
5、 "You can imagine with what eagerness I listened to him, Watson, for the very chance for which I had been panting during all thosemonths of inaction seemed to have come within my reach. In my inmostheart I believed that I could succeed where others failed, and now Ihad the opportunity to test myself.

"Now, my dear sir," said Holmes, "is it not obvious to you nowthat this matter really strikes very much deeper than either you orthe police were at first inclined to think? It appeared to you to be asimple case; to me it seems exceedingly complex. Consider what isinvolved by your theory. You suppose that your son came down fromhis bed, went, at great risk, to your dressing-room, opened yourbureau, took out your coronet, broke off by main force a small portionof it, went off to some other place, concealed three gems out of thethirty-nine, with such skill that nobody can find them, and thenreturned with the other thirty-six into the room in which he exposedhimself to the greatest danger of being discovered. I ask you now,is such a theory tenable?"
