1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "'Don't you know that it is wicked to do so?' asked my father.
2. "Great big plate-glass windows and lots of clerks. The man I sawsaid they hired ever so many people."
3. "When?"
4. She was glad when the short half hour was over and the wheelsbegan to whirr again. Though wearied, she would beinconspicuous. This illusion ended when another young man passedalong the aisle and poked her indifferently in the ribs with histhumb. She turned about, indignation leaping to her eyes, but hehad gone on and only once turned to grin. She found it difficultto conquer an inclination to cry.
5. "Oh," she thought, "there he sits. 'She needn't see me.' Ishould think he would be ashamed of himself."
6. Once these things were in her hand, on her person, she mightdream of giving them up; the method by which they came mightintrude itself so forcibly that she would ache to be rid of thethought of it, but she would not give them up. "Put on the oldclothes--that torn pair of shoes," was called to her by herconscience in vain. She could possibly have conquered the fearof hunger and gone back; the thought of hard work and a narrowround of suffering would, under the last pressure of conscience, have yielded, but spoil her appearance?--be old-clothed and poor-appearing?--never!

1. Two of the men got around quite near him, but behind his back. They were rather social, and he listened to what they said.
2. "If you'll do that, we'll call it off for the present and I'llget out."
3. "Drouet is hurt," said Hurstwood quickly. "He wants to see you.Come quickly."
4. "As mother felt in her pocket for some change, her fingerstouched a cold and trembling hand which had clutched her purse."
5. "Come on," said Drouet. "Brace up. What are you afraid of? Goon out there now, and do the trick. What do you care?"
6. He little knew as he went out of the door that night what asecret flame he had kindled in the bosom of the girl he leftbehind. Carrie was possessed of that sympathetic, impressionablenature which, ever in the most developed form, has been the gloryof the drama. She was created with that passivity of soul whichis always the mirror of the active world. She possessed aninnate taste for imitation and no small ability. Even withoutpractice, she could sometimes restore dramatic situations she hadwitnessed by re-creating, before her mirror, the expressions ofthe various faces taking part in the scene. She loved tomodulate her voice after the conventional manner of thedistressed heroine, and repeat such pathetic fragments asappealed most to her sympathies. Of late, seeing the airy graceof the ingenue in several well-constructed plays, she had beenmoved to secretly imitate it, and many were the little movementsand expressions of the body in which she indulged from time totime in the privacy of her chamber. On several occasions, whenDrouet had caught her admiring herself, as he imagined, in themirror, she was doing nothing more than recalling some littlegrace of the mouth or the eyes which she had witnessed inanother. Under his airy accusation she mistook this for vanityand accepted the blame with a faint sense of error, though, as amatter of fact, it was nothing more than the first subtleoutcroppings of an artistic nature, endeavouring to re-create theperfect likeness of some phase of beauty which appealed to her.In such feeble tendencies, be it known, such outworking of desireto reproduce life, lies the basis of all dramatic art.

1. "Good-bye," she answered, taking his proffered hand.
2. He was unconscious of just how much this habit had hold of himuntil one day he found his lips repeating an old answer he hadmade to one of his friends. They were in Fitzgerald and Moy's.It was as if he stood in the door of his elegant little office, comfortably dressed, talking to Sagar Morrison about the value ofSouth Chicago real estate in which the latter was about toinvest.
3. "It's a lie," he said, driven to a corner and knowing no otherexcuse.
4. "I wonder what's getting into me, anyhow?" he said.
5. "Well," he said, as he counted it out, "that's about the last ofmy money. I'll have to get something pretty soon."
6. "I might as well go right away," she said, without looking back.

1. This was rather awkwardly put by Patton, but Carrie redeemed itwith a grace which was inspiring.
2. "The man was here for the rent to-day."
3. The two men were in the most harrowed state of affection. Theyscarcely heard the few remaining words with which the sceneconcluded. They only saw their idol, moving about with appealinggrace, continuing a power which to them was a revelation.
4、 "Old Pepper," said Drouet.
5、 Ames was looking away rather abstractedly at the crowd and showedan interesting profile to Carrie. His forehead was high, hisnose rather large and strong, his chin moderately pleasing. Hehad a good, wide, well-shaped mouth, and his dark-brown hair wasparted slightly on one side. He seemed to have the least touchof boyishness to Carrie, and yet he was a man full grown.

A big, motherly looking woman invariably stood guard at the doorduring the entire operation and counted the admissible number. The men moved up in solemn order. There was no haste and noeagerness displayed. It was almost a dumb procession. In thebitterest weather this line was to be found here. Under an icywind there was a prodigious slapping of hands and a dancing offeet. Fingers and the features of the face looked as if severelynipped by the cold. A study of these men in broad light provedthem to be nearly all of a type. They belonged to the class thatsit on the park benches during the endurable days and sleep uponthem during the summer nights. They frequent the Bowery andthose down-at-the-heels East Side streets where poor clothes andshrunken features are not singled out as curious. They are themen who are in the lodginghouse sitting-rooms during bleak andbitter weather and who swarm about the cheaper shelters whichonly open at six in a number of the lower East Side streets.Miserable food, ill-timed and greedily eaten, had played havocwith bone and muscle. They were all pale, flabby, sunken-eyed,hollow-chested, with eyes that glinted and shone and lips thatwere a sickly red by contrast. Their hair was but half attendedto, their ears anaemic in hue, and their shoes broken in leatherand run down at heel and toe. They were of the class whichsimply floats and drifts, every wave of people washing up one, asbreakers do driftwood upon a stormy shore.

There came a night when he confessed to Carrie that the businesswas not doing as well this month as it had the month before. This was in lieu of certain suggestions she had made concerninglittle things she wanted to buy. She had not failed to noticethat he did not seem to consult her about buying clothes forhimself. For the first time, it struck her as a ruse, or that hesaid it so that she would not think of asking for things. Herreply was mild enough, but her thoughts were rebellious. He wasnot looking after her at all. She was depending for herenjoyment upon the Vances.

She had had no experience with this class of individualswhatsoever, and did not know the salacity and humour of thetheatrical tribe. She only knew of the position which Mr. Haleoccupied, but, of all things, she did not wish to encounter thatpersonage, on account of her intimacy with his wife.
