2. Ames was looking away rather abstractedly at the crowd and showedan interesting profile to Carrie. His forehead was high, hisnose rather large and strong, his chin moderately pleasing. Hehad a good, wide, well-shaped mouth, and his dark-brown hair wasparted slightly on one side. He seemed to have the least touchof boyishness to Carrie, and yet he was a man full grown.
3. "It's mighty cold," he said. "Awful cold."
4. "If I don't get something pretty soon, I think I'll go home."
5. "Cold, isn't it?" said the early guest.
6. "I'm going away, Julia," he said, "for a few days."

1. "I don't know," said Minnie.
2. On the morrow Carrie reported promptly and was given a place inthe line. She saw a large, empty, shadowy play-house, stillredolent of the perfumes and blazonry of the night, and notablefor its rich, oriental appearance. The wonder of it awed anddelighted her. Blessed be its wondrous reality. How hard shewould try to be worthy of it. It was above the common mass, above idleness, above want, above insignificance. People came toit in finery and carriages to see. It was ever a centre of lightand mirth. And here she was of it. Oh, if she could onlyremain, how happy would be her days!
3. To her credit, be it said, she never once counted on Hurstwood. She could only approach that subject with a pang of sorrow andregret. For a truth, she was rather shocked and frightened bythis evidence of human depravity. He would have tricked herwithout turning an eyelash. She would have been led into a newerand worse situation. And yet she could not keep out the picturesof his looks and manners. Only this one deed seemed strange andmiserable. It contrasted sharply with all she felt and knewconcerning the man.
4. About this time Ames returned to New York. He had made a littlesuccess in the West, and now opened a laboratory in WoosterStreet. Of course, he encountered Carrie through Mrs. Vance; butthere was nothing responsive between them. He thought she wasstill united to Hurstwood, until otherwise informed. Not knowingthe facts then, he did not profess to understand, and refrainedfrom comment.
5. "I want to see the manager," she said.He ran away and spoke to one of a group of three men who wereconferring together. One of these came towards her.
6. Carrie looked at him a moment, her eyes distending. She hadbelieved it was all legal and binding enough.

1. "Silence!" exclaimed the captain. "Now, then, gentlemen, thesemen are without beds. They have to have some place to sleep to-night. They can't lie out in the streets. I need twelve centsto put one of them to bed. Who will give it to me?"
2. The latter laughed gleefully as she saw the hand coming her way.It was as if she were invincible when Hurstwood helped her.
3. "'Who told you to steal?' asked my mother.
4. Once these things were in her hand, on her person, she mightdream of giving them up; the method by which they came mightintrude itself so forcibly that she would ache to be rid of thethought of it, but she would not give them up. "Put on the oldclothes--that torn pair of shoes," was called to her by herconscience in vain. She could possibly have conquered the fearof hunger and gone back; the thought of hard work and a narrowround of suffering would, under the last pressure of conscience, have yielded, but spoil her appearance?--be old-clothed and poor-appearing?--never!
5. "You needn't cry," he said, getting into bed. "Things will comeout all right."
6. It must not be thought that any one could have mistaken her for anervous, sensitive, high-strung nature, cast unduly upon a cold, calculating, and unpoetic world. Such certainly she was not. Butwomen are peculiarly sensitive to their adornment.

1. His dinner cost him .50. By eight o'clock he was through, andthen, seeing guests leaving and the crowd of pleasure-seekersthickening outside wondered where he should go. Not home.Carrie would be up. No, he would not go back there this evening. He would stay out and knock around as a man who was independent--not broke--well might. He bought a cigar, and went outside onthe corner where other individuals were lounging--brokers, racingpeople, thespians--his own flesh and blood. As he stood there,he thought of the old evenings in Chicago, and how he used todispose of them. Many's the game he had had. This took him topoker.
2. "It's in your eyes and mouth," he went on abstractedly. "Iremember thinking, the first time I saw you, that there wassomething peculiar about your mouth. I thought you were about tocry."
3. To one not inclined to drink, and gifted with a more serious turnof mind, such a bubbling, chattering, glittering chamber mustever seem an anomaly, a strange commentary on nature and life. Here come the moths, in endless procession, to bask in the lightof the flame. Such conversation as one may hear would not warranta commendation of the scene upon intellectual grounds. It seemsplain that schemers would choose more sequestered quarters toarrange their plans, that politicians would not gather here incompany to discuss anything save formalities, where the sharp-eared may hear, and it would scarcely be justified on the scoreof thirst, for the majority of those who frequent these moregorgeous places have no craving for liquor. Nevertheless, thefact that here men gather, here chatter, here love to pass andrub elbows, must be explained upon some grounds. It must be thata strange bundle of passions and vague desires give rise to sucha curious social institution or it would not be.
4、 "Here you are," he said to Carrie, when she came through again.
5、 "It was wonderful."

In all her stay in the city, Carrie had never heard of this showyparade; had never even been on Broadway when it was taking place. On the other hand, it was a familiar thing to Mrs. Vance, who notonly knew of it as an entity, but had often been in it, goingpurposely to see and be seen, to create a stir with her beautyand dispel any tendency to fall short in dressiness bycontrasting herself with the beauty and fashion of the town.

{ He patted her reassuringly upon the shoulder, but Carrie felt howreally futile had been her hopes. She could clearly see thatthis easy-going soul intended no move in her behalf. He wassimply letting things drift because he preferred the free roundof his present state to any legal trammellings.
