1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Quite so. And she was afterwards seen walking into Hyde Park incompany with Flora Millar, a woman who is now in custody, and whohad already made a disturbance at Mr. Doran's house that morning.""Ah, yes. I should like a few particulars as to this young lady, andyour relations to her."
2. Holmes looked round him with curiosity.
3. armchair and greeting his visitor with the easy air of genialitywhich he could so readily assume. "Pray take this chair by thefire, Mr. Baker. It is a cold night, and I observe that yourcirculation is more adapted for summer than for winter. Ah,Watson, you have just come at the right time. Is that your hat,Mr. Baker?"
4. "Well we have been married now for a year, and very happy we havebeen. But about a month ago, at the end of June, I saw for the firsttime signs of trouble. One day my wife received a letter from America.I saw the American stamp. She turned deadly white, read the letter, and threw it into the fire. She made no allusion to it afterwards, andI made none, for a promise is a promise, but she has never known aneasy hour from that moment. There is always a look of fear upon herface- a look as if she were waiting and expecting. She would do betterto trust me. She would find that I was her best friend. But untilshe speaks, I can say nothing. Mind you, she is a truthful woman,Mr. Holmes, and whatever trouble there may have been in her pastlife it has been no fault of hers. I am only a simple Norfolksquire, but there is not a man in England who ranks his familyhonour more highly than I do. She knows it well, and she knew itwell before she married me. She would never bring any stain upon it-of that I am sure.
5. "My dear fellow! I congrat-"
6. "I have looked into this case with some care, and I am not convincedthat you are on the right lines. I don't want you to commit yourselftoo far unless you are sure."

1. "Let us have everything in its due order." Holmes thrust his longthin legs out towards the fire and composed himself to listen."In the first place, I may say that I have met, on the whole, withno actual ill-treatment from Mr. and Mrs. Rucastle. It is only fair tothem to say that. But I cannot understand them, and I am not easy inmy mind about them."
2. "I ought to. I pay for it with about half my wound pension.""Then I'll make you my 'Handy Guide to the Turf.' What about SirRobert Norberton? Does the name recall anything?"
3. "Had he ever showed any signs of having taken opium?"
4. "They are all seaports. That the writer was on board of aship."
5. It was in the spring of the year 1894 that all London wasinterested, and the fashionable world dismayed, by the murder of theHonourable Ronald Adair under most unusual and inexplicablecircumstances. The public has already learned those particulars of thecrime which came out in the police investigation, but a good dealwas suppressed upon that occasion, since the case for theprosecution was so overwhelmingly strong that it was not necessaryto bring forward all the facts. Only now, at the end of nearly tenyears, am I allowed to supply those missing links which make up thewhole of that remarkable chain. The crime was of interest in itself, but that interest was as nothing to me compared to the inconceivablesequel, which afforded me the greatest shock and surprise of any eventin my adventurous life. Even now, after this long interval, I findmyself thrilling as I think of it, and feeling once more that suddenflood of joy, amazement, and incredulity which utterly submerged mymind. Let me say to that public, which has shown some interest inthose glimpses which I have occasionally given them of the thoughtsand actions of a very remarkable man, that they are not to blame me ifI have not shared my knowledge with them, for I should have consideredit my first duty to do so, had I not been barred by a positiveprohibition from his own lips, which was only withdrawn upon the thirdof last month.
6. "I think I can, Stackhurst. Come with me now! And you, Inspector, come along! We will see if we cannot deliver this murderer into yourhands."

1. "Does she know about the Austrian episode?"
2. "Who the, devil are you?" he thundered. "And what are you doing uponmy property?" Then, as Holmes returned no answer, he took a coupleof steps forward and raised a heavy stick which he carried. "Do youhear me?" he cried. "Who are you? What are you doing here?" His cudgelquivered in the air.
3. "Yes, I can."
4. "Well, I'll come out by the same train to-morrow, though it's morethan likely that my report will be a negative one."
5. "I join in it because there is no other way in the world by whichjustice can be gained. What does the law of England care for therivers of blood shed years ago in San Pedro, or for the ship load oftreasure which this man has stolen? To you they are like crimescommitted in some other planet. But we know. We have learned the truthin sorrow and in suffering. To us there is no fiend in hell likeJuan Murillo, and no peace in life while his victims still cry forvengeance."
6. "Then, for pity's sake, tell me what was the cause of my sister'sdeath."

1. "I have seen the will of the deceased wife," said he. "Todetermine its exact meaning I have been obliged to work out thepresent prices of the investments with which it is concerned. Thetotal income, which at the time of the wife's death was little shortof L1000 is now, through the fall in agricultural prices, not morethan L750. Each daughter can claim an income of L250, in case ofmarriage. It is evident, therefore, that if both girls had married, this beauty would have had a mere pittance, while even one of themwould cripple him to a very serious extent. My morning's work hasnot been wasted, since it has proved that he has the very strongestmotives for standing in the way of anything of the sort. And now,Watson, this is too serious for dawdling, especially as the old man isaware that we are interesting ourselves in his affairs; so if youare ready, we shall call a cab and drive to Waterloo. I should be verymuch obliged if you would slip your revolver into your pocket. AnEley's No. 2 is an excellent argument with gentlemen who can twiststeel pokers into knots. That and a tooth-brush are, I think, all thatwe need."
2. "It is John Hopley Neligan."
3. "They set fire to our rooms last night. No great harm was done.""Good heavens, Holmes, this is intolerable!"
4、 "But at least it covers all the facts. After new facts come to ourknowledge which cannot be covered by it, it will be time enough toreconsider it. We can do nothing more until we have a message from ourfriend at Norbury."
5、 "I shall be happy to give you any information in my power.""Was it in this room that you gave your instructions as to thecopying of the document?"

"`And he is admirably suited for it,' the other answered. `Hehas every requirement. I cannot recall when I have seen anythingso fine.' He took a step backward, cocked his head on one side, and gazed at my hair until I felt quite bashful. Then suddenly heplunged forward, wrung my hand, and congratulated me warmly on mysuccess.

The mark which he was examining began upon the brasswork on therighthand side of the keyhole, and extended for about four inches, where it had scratched the varnish from the surface.

It was some time before the health of my friend Mr. SherlockHolmes recovered from the strain caused by his immense exertions inthe spring of '87. The whole question of the Netherland-SumatraCompany and of the colossal schemes of Baron Maupertuis are too recentin the minds of the public, and are too intimately concerned withpolitics and finance to be fitting subjects for this series ofsketches. They led, however, in an indirect fashion to a singularand complex problem which gave my friend an opportunity ofdemonstrating the value of a fresh weapon among the many with which hewaged his lifelong battle against crime.

I left him full of the image of this magnificent intellectbabbling like a foolish child. He had handed me the key, and with ahappy thought I took it with me lest he should lock himself in. Mrs.Hudson was waiting, trembling and weeping, in the passage. Behind meas I passed from the flat I heard Holmes's high, thin voice in somedelirious chant. Below, as I stood whistling for a cab, a man cameon me through the fog.

"Yes, yes: someone has passed along," said Holmes, stooping over thegrass border. "Our lady must have picked her steps carefully, must shenot, since on the one side she would leave a track on the path, and onthe other an even clearer one on the soft bed?"

"A coincidence! Here is one of the three men whom we had named aspossible actors in this drama, and he meets a violent death during thevery hours when we know that that drama was being enacted. The oddsare enormous against its being coincidence. No figures could expressthem. No, my dear Watson, the two events are connected- must beconnected. It is for us to find the connection."
