The job market faces challenges. Some five million Americans have been out of work for six months, raising the risk their skills will erode and make it even harder for them to find jobs down the road. And fears of slowing revenue growth could keep a lid on hiring by companies. About 36% of U.S. executives expect the head count at their firm to fall, according to an October survey by advisory firm CEB, compared with 29% who said that during the summer.[qh]

This year, pop's best albums came from strong women who had a lot to say: Lorde's searing look at loneliness, Kesha's raucous statement of liberation, Taylor Swift's reckoning between her self and the version presented in the press.
When the coronavirus hit the economy, the impact on consumers and businesses alike was so quick and so severe, banks almost immediately offered borrowers the ability to skip or put off payments on a range of loans, including credit card loans. Deferrals peaked at the end of the second quarter, but came down significantly during the third quarter.

She made several points in a note to clients Tuesday that struck me as new:
In this case, the Lakers got a reasonable return for their top trade piece, prepared to give their young players like D'Angelo Russell and Brandon Ingram greater responsibilities down the stretch, and hunkered down for a tank that just might land UCLA star Lonzo Ball.
Successful CEOs tend to follow a structured, daily schedule of rising early, exercising, having snacks on hand for fuel and socializing many evenings of the week.
“It is exceptionally unlikely that we would be witnessing a record year of warmth, during a record-warm decade, during a several decades-long period of warmth that appears to be unrivaled for more than a thousand years, were it not for the rising levels of planet-warming gases produced by the burning of fossil fuels,” Michael E. Mann, a climate scientist at the Pennsylvania State University, said in an email.

A combination of tax increases and spending cuts in 2013 shaved about 1.5 percentage points off annual economic growth, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Many forecasters expect the fiscal drag in 2014 to be one-third that amount, or less. 'You'll have more political certainty this year,' said Gregory Daco, a U.S. economist at Oxford Economics.

6. Now, like an addict who can't stop, Gross writes in his Tipping Point blog that QE will run to 2015. Earlier it seemed like the Bubble With No Name Yet should be renamed the Bernanke Bubble. But now, with Gross and Pimco's $2 trillion at stake here, maybe we should call it The Gross Bubble.

This is again not what you would expect during a recession. During the Great Recession, credit card charge-offs pretty much consistently rose starting in 2006 and peaked at more than 10% in 2010, so the decline occurring right now is certainly an odd trend.
Can it last?
Most banks have said they don't expect significant levels of charge-offs until the back half of 2021. However, at the end of the third quarter, PNC Financial Services Group (NYSE:PNC) CEO Bill Demchak has said he is growing increasingly concerned about the consumer, especially those who were receiving the $600 enhanced unemployment benefits. Demchak said he has specifically seen those account balances start to decline, which is why he thinks a second round of stimulus absolutely needs to happen. Also, it's still somewhat early in regards to loans. It took credit card charge-offs at all U.S. banks a few years to rise from 4% to more than 10% during the Great Recession -- it doesn't just suddenly happen.
The US and European steel industries have accused China’s heavily subsidised sector of flooding the global market with steel, “dumping” it by selling below production costs and driving down international prices. The collapse in steel prices in recent years has caused the closure of mills across the world from Australia to the UK and parts of the US industrial heartland.
