Fantagraphics, “Publisher of the World’s Greatest Cartoonists” brings the noise with the comedic exploits of “The Greatest Band in the World™,” Tenacious D in a new Jack Black graphic novel, Post-Apocalypto due to release September 2020. Hand-drawn entirely by Jack Black, and co-written by Tenacious D member Kyle Gass, the graphic novel is a companion-piece to Post-Apocalypto, the YouTube web series, and Post-Apocalypto, the fourth studio album from the American rock power-duo. When a nuclear bomb rains destruction upon our world, Tenacious D must battle the hideous evil spawned by the blast or humanity’s last chance for survival will be lost.
Jack Black and Kyle Gass formed the comedy rock act, Tenacious D in 1984 when the two were members of The Actors’ Gang, an experimental non-profit theater in Culver City, California. They released the album Tenacious D on Epic Records, with the star-power of rock legend Dave Grohl on drums and production by Dust Brothers in 2001. Tenacious D rocketed up the stairway to heaven, touring with the biggest names in rock and roll including Pearl Jam and Tool, with an international following cheering along from the UK to Australia. The duo dappled in multimedia with The Complete Master Works, their first live concert DVD from 2003, achieving both gold and platinum status from the Record Industry Association of America and Black and Gass sharing the big screen with Satan in the 2006’s feature film Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny, while scoring the accompanying soundtrack with King Gizmo of the Dust Brothers.
Tenacious D’s Post-Apocalypto began as independent animated web series on YouTube in late 2018, with amusing hand-drawn minimalism and bold daubs of color depicting the zany adventures of KG and JB in the wake of a wacky nuclear holocaust. The Post-Apocalypto web series was accompanied by a 21-track album released on Columbia Records in November 2018. Recorded with an orchestra of string and steel guitar, the album features Grammy Award-winning Tenacious D collaborators, John Konesky and John Spiker, with Dave Grohl returning to hammer out the beat. Fantagraphics, the publisher of “the very best comics and graphic novels that the medium has to offer,” completes the Post-Apocalypto creative cycle with the September 2020 release of Post-Apocalypto, the graphic novel from Black and Gass.
Tenacious D’s Post-Apocalypto presents a topsy-turvy world-torn-asunder with pterodactyls, flying saucers, and squid-like aliens circling the skies, where KG and JB explore a bombed-out landscape with a two-headed dog named Hope. Home to Disney, Peanuts, and Love and Rockets, Fantagraphics sets the stage for the full-color Tenacious D print experience, promising 180 pages of “twists and turns including an insane visit to the White House, a time machine, a space adventure, and some tried and true daddy issues. Post-Apocalypto is as hilarious as it is political, and as brilliant and multi-faceted as its incredible creators.” Echoing the enthusiastic and hyperbolic statements of their publisher, Tenacious D proclaims, “Fantagraphics has been the shining beacon of creativity in comic books for decades. We are thrilled to release our magnum opus with the undisputed greatest and best comic book publisher in the world. Fantagraphics 4 life.” Clearly, only the “Publisher of the World’s Greatest Cartoonists" could present “The Greatest Band in the World™” and the end of life as we know it — just for fun.
Post-Apocalypto, the graphic novel drops the bomb on you this September. And catch Jack Black in Jumaji 2: The Next Level on DVD March 17, 2020.
