I am really quite worried. I have just found out I'm pregnant with second child. This pregnancy was not planned and we're quite shocked that we are actually pregnant because we've been careful. In any case, I have now started prenatal vitamins but missed the first 4 weeks. I know there is now an increased risk of a neural tube defect. My question is: what is the likelihood that this pregnancy will go all the way through with an undetected NTD in the baby? In other words, is it likely that the NTD will be spotted on a scan and when?

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

My second pregnancy was unplanned and therefore I hadn't taken any folic acid. I was so, so worried about this as I had a sister with Spina Bifida and for my first pregnancy had been prescribed a higher dose. I was however assured by the midwives that whilst it is recommended to take folic acid it is also added to quite a lot of food, cereals and bread(if memory serves me correctly)amongst others and is naturally in lots of other foods too.
My second daughter was born completely fine. They also said that it still has benefits even if you do start taking it later.
If there was a problem it would show up in your 12 week scan.
I know it's much easier said than done but try not to worry and enjoy your pregnancy as much as you can.
Best wishes.

Hi,

Dont worry yourself over this. Lots of women dont take folic acid straight away, I didnt take it at all during my last pregnancy as I didnt know I was having a baby til 16 weeks!

What will be will be, but the chances are small of there being a problem, and it would usually be picked up during one of your scans.

Take care

I remembered to take it once or twice - now 37 plus weeks, all seems fine,#
Don't think it is something you really need to worry about - women have been having babies for a long time before folic acid tablets came along. And like another poster said, there is a reasonable amount in the food we eat - like beans and certain green veg.
Plus women find out at various different stages about their pregnancy. The tablets I have (but forgot to take) said don't take any past 12 weeks, so many women don't realise they are pregnant till 8, 12-13, even 16 weeks - sometimes later, all who go on to have normal pregnancies.
All the best.

I didn't take folic acid until  I found out that I was pregnant and that was at 5 weeks.  I also had two pretty heavy binge drinking (Shocking I know) sessions in that 5 weeks too and was worried about it all through the pregnancy as it was an unexpected surprise.

However the pregnancy was fine and now she's a little over 3 months old and seems to be a perfect happy little baby... although she does have her moments!!  :-)

Try and not worry too much about it and just look after yourself as much as you can from now on!

Good luck!!  xx

I didn't find out I was pregnant til 18+5 and it was too late to even bother with folic acid (I was also smoking and drinking til I found out) and my ds is a picture of health so I'm sure everything will be ok!
Just keep eating healthily and try not to worry! :)

I have NTD  and born around the time before scans and prenatal vitamins and it hasnt been comletley proven that folic acid deficancy (sp) causes spina bifida but taking it helps ( i was part of the studies when i was a child as was my mum)
I really wouldnt worry if you diet is fine as alot of  things have or have been fortified with folic acid , and any abnormality would show up in a 12 week scan , try and not to worry xx

Hi Anon :hiya:

You have had some reassuring advice from the other Mums already. I hope this has helped.

Folic acid is found in many foods in our every day diets so it is likely that you will have absorbed some in the very early weeks of your pregnancy.

I would encourage you to talk to your Midwife about your worries she will be able to advise you when to expect your scans and what each one will and won't be able to tell you.

Will you let us know how you get on Anon?

Thank you to everyone for the reassuring words. I rushed out as soon as I found out I was pregnant and bought some vitamins. Come to think of it, I was eating quite a lot of brown seeded bread and peanuts in the first 4 weeks so hopefully everything will end up just fine. I will be seeing a midwife in the next couple of weeks and will let you know how I get on with the scans.

Thanks again
